Sir Richard Branson, in Oslo to receive the Business for Peace Award, asked the Norwegian government for a USD 25 millon donation to his own Virgin Earth Challenge.
In his own words, on http://virgin.com , Sir Richard reports on the trip to Oslo and his suggestion that rich Norway should invest in Virgin Earth Challenge:
"Asked for my ideas on how to best invest Norway’s massive sovereign wealth fund, I suggested that the Norwegians join the Virgin Earth Challenge and top up our prize by another $25 million. It would be small cost for a country as wealthy as Norway, but give a massive boost to our effort to remove carbon from the atmosphere."
The british billionaire entrepreneur was humble to receive the Business for Peace Awaard, and describes the Oslo Business for Peace Summit as "an inspirational day, kicking off with a spirited roundtable discussion about the ways in which business can create shared value – turning a profit while making a difference for people and the planet".
After the round table discussions and talks with the Norwegian foreign minister in special, Branson reports: "Norway's foreign minister Børge Brende understands that we need a stronger partnership between business, civil society and government, and I couldn't agree more."
Branson also comments the other Business for Peace Award Winners.
His own feelings about receiving the Oslo award he describes this way: "Now, very rarely is an honour like this the fruit of one person’s labour. It’s no different in my case. This Business for Peace Award recognizes the collective efforts of some truly outstanding people I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years."
